Eileen Shaw, started out as a student Nurse in 1969 in Northern Ireland, before qualifying as a midwife in 1974. Eileen has since had a 53 year long, rewarding and happy career across a variety of different roles at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals.

Over the span of her career, although impossible to say for sure, Eileen estimates that she has delivered hundreds of babies recalling a night where there were 15 births one after the other. “You can have nights like that where you’re supporting mother after mother and others where you get to nurture that time with expecting and new mums. No day is truly the same and as a midwife you cherish each of those special moments.”

Several years later, once her children had started school, Eileen accepted a position as a community midwife which involved seeing new and expecting mums at home. Looking back Eileen named this as her fondest memory highlighting the success of the continuity of care service that she helped develop and deliver. “It was lovely you could meet a new mummy who was going through her journey for the first time and be with her throughout it all, I’ve also seen mothers’ multiple times and seen their families grow delivering babies of the babies I had delivered… there is something magical about that.”

After an accident Eileen moved roles to a day shift team leader back at Blackpool Victoria Hospital where she was less hands on but used her years of experience to guide and lead teams of midwives and new students. “We always describe our team as a work family, we are here for each other during those celebrations, life’s challenges and darkest times. My colleagues and friends play such a big part in why the team here in Blackpool are so special.”

In 2008, Eileen officially retired as a full-time midwife, Deputy Head of midwifery at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, Lisa Fitzgerald echoed the thoughts of the team, “Eileen is the epitome of a compassionate midwife and a real credit to Blackpool Maternity services, her wisdom, experience and infectious personality has inspired many midwifes across the years. Whilst our technologies, procedures and policies have changed, Eileen has stayed throughout delivering generations of babies. We were thrilled when she agreed to stay on our bank staff, post-retirement.”

53 years later after first enrolling to become a midwife Eileen continues to support the Triage team at the Maternity unit 2 days a week. “To anyone considering a career in midwifery, my advice would be talk to midwives, learn about the career. There are so many specialties from mental health midwifery to bereavement midwifes. To me it has been very interesting, rewarding, and challenging but importantly you are part of a work family who put mothers and babies at the centre of their care.”

Our Lancashire and South Cumbria (LSC) Perinatal Pelvic Health Services (PPHS) is currently being developed collaboratively to increase current services and improve the prevention, identification, and treatment of pelvic health conditions during pregnancy and following birth, and ultimately reduce the number of people living with pelvic health conditions postnatally and in later life.

Research shows that one in three women experience urinary incontinence in the first year after having a baby and up to three quarters of these women continue to experience this in the following 12 years after giving birth.

A further one in 10 women experience faecal incontinence and another one in 12 will have a pelvic organ prolapse.

Although a lot of the pelvic health issues experienced by people are common, they are treatable.

In Lancashire and South Cumbria, uptake of the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination amongst pregnant women is at 75%, of second dose is 68% (regional target of 70%) and of third dose at 34% (Data from 07/06/22). Feedback from service users and staff informs that there is still anxiety about the vaccination stemming from changes in messaging and concerns about the vaccines safety. National and international evidence and information is growing significantly, both in regard to the impact of COVID-19 infection on the pregnant mother and in relation to the safety of the vaccination for use during pregnancy. Our aim is to ensure that practitioners have timely access to the evidence-base to enable them to facilitate transparent conversations with service users to support their decision making.

Two Covid Vaccination in Pregnancy Advocates (CViPAs) have been recruited to support this work.

They carry out monthly onsite visits to each of our provider Trusts, cascade key messages and new information to service providers and community leaders and co-produce information resources such as 7 minute briefings, videos and posters which answer common queries from service users and staff.

More formal training has been developed and can be cascaded via Public Health Midwives on request.

We are progressing work against the national deliverable of supporting vaccination against COVID-19 in pregnancy, which in addition to providing evidence-based information in all contacts and across all settings antenatally, includes widening access to vaccination at onsite pregnancy hubs and via the vaccination at-home service. We are working closely with the Mass Vaccination Teams to develop plans against these, particularly in relation to the expansion of onsite pregnancy hubs at all units and the expansion of the COVID-19 Vaccination at Home service to include pregnant and postnatal women and their families.

Our business analysts have identified geographical areas and GP surgeries with lowest uptake so that we can work together with health service providers, community leaders and charities to support the cascade of key messages within those communities, using the principle of Making Every Contact Count.

As a system we are progressing work towards all providers delivering an in-house tobacco support service, as per The NHS Long Term Plan. Targets set for our LMS nationally are that this model of care is available to 46% of maternal smokers by March 2023 and 100% of maternal smokers by the end of March 2024. We are also supporting our neonatal services, health visiting services, family centres’ services and universities to become Baby Friendly Initiative Accredited.

There is a well-established, supportive infant feeding network across Lancashire and South Cumbria, who aim to standardise knowledge and training and care pathways across the whole system so that women, babies and their families receive the same high standard of care wherever they are.

The Lancashire and South Cumbria Infant Feeding Network have developed and on an ongoing basis deliver standardised training packages for staff and students in various roles, who may come into contact with pregnant women and their infants into childhood. These standardised packages continue to be developed so that staff in related services are also trained in basic infant feeding principles. Each Trust develops annual update training based on new evidence, in response to new needs or risks, or to support an improvement in areas of knowledge identified during regular audits of staff and women.

There is a suite of system-wide infant feeding policy and guidelines already ratified and implemented, with a second iteration which includes additional guidelines imminent. Bitesize infographs and supporting information are continually developed to help staff understand changes to the policy and guidelines in small sections.

The network also develops resources for service users to support them to consider their options and to raise their awareness of services. This was particularly evident in their crisis response during COVID-19.

Our two development areas for this year are:
working to influence and contribute to the development of local authorities’ Food Crisis Pathways in all localities to ensure inclusion of infant feeding

supporting newly qualified Lactation Consultants to embed their learning into practice, developing a system-wide approach to delivering rapid access clinics and daily triage services.

The BTH Maternity Bereavement team has been introduced, coinciding with Baby Loss Awareness Week.

The team recently expanded with the appointment of Bereavement Midwife Laura Walsh, and will support people at what can be a devestating time in their lives.

Holly Martinez, Maternity Matron, said: “The Maternity Bereavement team is now complete. The team can focus on improving the bereavement environment as well as making changes at this precious time. I feel extremely proud to see this team now complete.

Jackie Brunton, Lead Nurse End of Life and Bereavement Care, added: “We are proud to introduce our team during Baby Loss Awareness Week and the vital support that is needed. The Swan Specialist Bereavement Midwife and Swan Support Worker roles join our existing Swan End of Life Bereavement Team providing this specialist support to families. The team will also work alongside colleagues across Maternity services to introduce our Swan Model of Care.”

Meanwhile, Blackpool Tower will be lit up on Saturday, 15 October from 7pm to mark the awareness week, and the local SANDS group is holding its Lights of Love walk tonight (Thursday, 13 October) starting at the main entrance to Carleton Crematorium from 6.30pm. A special online Book of Memories has also been set up where families can share a message.
