Smokefree pregnancy pathways
Smoking prevalence in pregnancy is approximately 11%, we need to specify which) and has not reduced at the rate seen in the general population. Smoking affects mothers, the developing foetus and child health – doubling the chances of still birth and increasing the risk of sudden infant death threefold.
As a system we are progressing work towards all providers delivering an in-house tobacco support service, as per The NHS Long Term Plan. Targets set for our LMS nationally are that this model of care is available to 46% of maternal smokers by March 2023 and 100% of maternal smokers by the end of March 2024. New team members will be recruited to maternity teams to deliver this work, led by Public Health Midwives.
Standardised annual update training across our LMS has been developed and is delivered.
