The Central Delivery Suite

Maternity Services at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) offer midwife-led and obstetric consultant-led care for high risk and low risk women, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Central Delivery Suite is on the ground floor of the Women's Unit, with the neonatal unit and two operating theatres nearby. The Antenatal and Postnatal wards are situated on level 2 of the Women's Unit.

There are six delivery rooms within the central delivery suite. Each of these delivery rooms has an electronic bed which can be adjusted to support different birthing positions, and en-suite bathrooms.

There is also an active birth room with a birthing pool in the central delivery suite.

The active birth room has an en-suite bathroom, and is equipped with a variety of equipment, including:

  • Low mattress
  • Birthing stool
  • Floor mats
  • Birth balls

This equipment is designed to encourage your body to adopt comfortable positions during labour and birth.

There is disabled access to the women’s unit, as well as limited blue badge and drop off parking spaces available outside. A pay and display car park is close by, as well as a bus stop with good public transport links.

Maternity Services at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) offer midwife-led and obstetric consultant-led care for high risk and low risk women.

Nothing is too much trouble for our experienced and dedicated midwives, doctors, clinical support workers and clerical staff.

They will strive to provide you with all the help and support you need to make sure you receive the best possible experience in our care.
We have an active birth room in the Central Delivery Suite at the RLI. Our modernised active birth room also contains a birthing pool.

Home Birth

Rather than coming into hospital to have your baby, many women chose to give birth at home. This option is available to women who are considered to be low-risk or have no underlying medical conditions.

You can request to have a home birth with your midwife. After the birth of your baby, care and support are provided in your home.

If you choose to have your baby at home, then the community midwifery team will be happy to support this - as long as no problems have been identified in your pregnancy. If there are additional risks which would suggest recommendation of birth in a consultant led unit, but you choose to have your baby at home, discussions can be facilitated by your named community midwife and Supervisor of midwives.
